The second scientific expedition team to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau conducted field investigations in the intermontane mountainous region

On August 6, 2021, the second comprehensive scientific expedition to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, led by researchers Fan Hongrui and Zeng Qingdong from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, along with Associate Researcher Yang Guifeng, conducted field investigations and discussions in the intermontane mountainous region. Mr. Wang Zhili, Vice General Manager of Qinghai Dachaidan Mining Co., Ltd., and the Deputy Dean in charge and project leader of the First Geological Exploration Institute of Qinghai in the intermontane mountainous region, were among those who participated in this research expedition.
The scientific expedition team further deepened their understanding of the presence of large-scale thrust structures in the intermontane mountainous region through field investigations of the drill holes in the Xicuicun Mine area and on-site surveys. They also conducted field visits to the Baiyuntan-Baitoushan project and the Hongdenggou gold mine site of the First Geological Exploration Institute of Qinghai Province. After the investigations, they held summary discussions and exchanges with technical personnel from Qinghai Dachaidan Mining Co., Ltd., and the Geological Exploration Institute
During the exchange meeting, researchers Yang Kuifeng, Fan Hongrui, and Zeng Qingdong summarized the control role of thrust structures on gold deposits in the intermontane mountainous region, as well as the exploration directions for gold deposits in the Baiyuntan-Baitoushan area. They also discussed and addressed the problems encountered in the exploration process of the project team and the company. They pointed out that: firstly, it is basically confirmed that there are thrust structures in the intermontane mountainous region, which are of significant scale and have persisted for a long time. However, corresponding research work is lacking, and further efforts should be made to strengthen research in this area in the next step.
Secondly, under the influence of thrust structures, the original strata and ore bodies in the intermontane mountainous region have been greatly affected. Deep-seated exploration work cannot be carried out according to traditional methods. Instead, it should be conducted based on different blocks. The size of these blocks determines the exploration prospects within a mining section. Thirdly, in the Baiyuntan area, the surface alteration zone is wide, and the tectonic environment is open. Although the inflow of mineral fluids is limited, leading to relatively poor surface mineralization and smaller ore body sizes, if there is a compressional environment in the deep, with relatively concentrated mineral fluids, there could be good ore-forming prospects.

The discovery of reverse fault thrust structures holds significant implications for the tectonic evolution of the northern Chai region and the resource prospects of the intermontane mountainous areas. It marks a breakthrough from traditional deep exploration methods, injecting new vitality and vigor into our exploration efforts. Their insights have provided clear direction for our company to advance in geological exploration and other related areas.
